The recent discovery of a hidden swarm of space junk in Earth's geosynchronous orbit (GEO) has raised concerns about the safety of our most valuable satellites. This critical zone, home to communication, weather monitoring, and navigation satellites, is now under threat from tiny, previously undetected fragments of space debris. The University of Warwick astronomers' study, published in the Journal of Astronautical Sciences, highlights the urgent need for a more comprehensive survey of GEO debris. The team's innovative use of blind stacking techniques has revealed 25 previously missed debris tracks, emphasizing the importance of size in detecting these faint objects. With nearly 80% of the detected debris attributed to undocumented incidents, the potential for collisions and damage to satellites is a serious concern. The study's findings underscore the need for improved detection methods and a more thorough understanding of the GEO debris environment to ensure the safety of our satellite infrastructure.
